"Carla and The Purple Room receive PlanBørnefonden's Girls' Prize for their great work in creating space for the voices that are otherwise not heard or have difficulty being heard. "Books are able to take us right into the thoughts and feelings of those who feel overlooked. This is also at the heart of PlanChildren's global work, ensuring that vulnerable children and young people are heard and seen. Here we have a special focus on girls - who are all too often overlooked and forgotten," said Charlotte Møller-Andersen, Chair of PlanBørnefonden's Board of Directors and Girl Award jury.
Magnus Heunicke, Minister for Equality, revealed and presented the award to Carla Rafaella Gianetti:
"The stories we hear today for PlanBørnefonden's Girl Award are a direct attack on the very fundamentals, namely girls and women's rights. And that's why this evening is so incredibly important," says Magnus Heunicke on stage. "I thought it was a law of nature that once we took a step forward and got women into the labor market and free abortion, you could never go back again. But that's no longer the case. We can see country after country that it's not just a standstill, but real steps backwards. Fortunately, it's not hopeless. There are some who go by the way and show that change is possible - that's what the Girl Award is all about."
This is the eighth time that PlanBørnefonden has awarded the Girl Award to a person or organization that has made a special effort to promote gender equality in Denmark. This year, for the first time, PlanBørnefonden presented an international award to an organization that works to promote gender equality through PlanBørnefonden's program work. This year, the winner of the international award was Entro Gate, an organization that works to empower young female entrepreneurs in Jordan - with a special focus on Syrian refugees.
